Teaching About Sexuality:  Emerging Perspectives
Some have argued that sexuality education has focused exclusively on health, and has failed to help youth understand sexuality.  Panelists will explore what it might mean to teach about sexuality, and will consider the barriers that schools create for meaningful education about sexuality.  How could learning about sexuality become part of the larger curriculum?

True Colors 2009 - AMAZING GLTBQ youth conference

True ColorsLast week I had the amazing opportunity to travel to the University of Connecticut to attend and present at the 16th annual "True Colors" conference sponsored by sexual minority youth and family services of CT (http://www.ourtruecolors.org/).   When I drove in on Friday afternoon, I was not prepared for the absolute explosion of queer youth pride that had taken over the UConn campus during their spring break.  This is a three-day conference (Th-Sat) and Friday is the big day since busloads of students travel with chaperones from all over the state.

Social justice activism at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) - April 2009

I'm posting this letter that has been circulated on several AERA listservs but thought it was important to bring it to the attention of those who aren't current AERA members or other scholars interested in what is going on with AERA and activism by scholars who disagree with decisions made by the leadership at AERA.

There has been lively discussion on the Queer SIG list about how to deal with sessions in the Hyatt - some suggested responses include:

1) Attend/present at the session but wear a button or armband to visibly indicate your protest

2) Do not purchase food or services from the Hyatt.  One scholar said he'd like to buy his coffee and muffin across the street, leave a tip for the waitstaff in the Hyatt, and go to his session - use their space and services but don't spend $$.

Reflections on NYC: Conversations with teachers about teaching critically and Avenue Q

I had a great week at AERA (American Educational Research Association annual meeting) in NYC. I had some great conversations with teachers and teacher educators there, but I also saw an amazing show that I have to talk about first.
