Claude Lévi strauss

Claude Lévi Strauss sounded familiar to me, but thanks to your blog I searched more about him. I found that he was a person who was trying to make sense to the chaos of the world, a brave and ingenious man who not only was curious about people, but cared about people. Coming from a “third world country” I feel always moved by people like him, who leaves his life of comfort to share the life experience of a completely different culture, trying to make sense of the world as a whole, making connections of the human experience regardless of culture. He explored the role of myths in the existence and subsistence of people, arguing that myths are not lies born of ingenious human fantasy, neither misleading constructions at the service of power, but rather rule governed coherent representations of a culture.
I think that his work deserves close consideration. Thanks for bringing him to our attention.

Baby Einstein Videos-Get Refund

I don't know if any of you know much about Baby Einstein Videos. . . but you can now get a refund if you really thought your baby would be smarter by watching them.  I always knew that my baby would be stupider by watching them or any other tv for that matter but if I wanted a twenty minute break, I'd rather put that on then some other garbage.   There is quite a bit of research  that children under two should not be watching t.v as it slows development, skills, etc that are so crucial at the early stages. Apparantly some other parents really thought that was the educational tool, and forgot to talk, play, interact with their kids. . . so now they can get a refund since they didn't see results!

You can check out all the articles online to see the hype, but here is a snip bit.. .

" If you were duped into thinking that Baby Einstein videos were helping your baby's brain, you can now get your money back. Three years after Walt Disney Co. stopped claiming the videos were educational for children under 2, it has announced it is offering a refund to anyone who bought a Baby Einstein video in the last five years.

The offer is a victory for the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, which filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission that accused Baby Einstein of making false and deceptive claims about the educational value of its products."

I'm not sure if it's a victory or a dissapointment in how sad our society has become. . to go ask for a refund from a product, instead of doing the job yourself.   You want to have kids, you should know how to raise them, and that doesn't include sticking them in front of the tv to learn colours, numbers, letters, etc!

Baby Eintstein----the gift that keeps on giving!

Hi Lisa,
I remember the first time I heard about the Babyeinstein products, it was described from a new mom as the educational toy to have. I remember taht same friend slippimg in aVHS cassette and watching her boy reactto the colors. I was sold, and that Christams, I went around form one store to another searching for the sold-out VHS cassettes. When I finally found a store that had recieved them, I bought one for every child I knew.
Research found that babies under the age of two don't gain anything from television and therefore Disney was marketing their product my adding the word educational. See the ad below for details.

When I read your aricle, I did a searchh to learn more since it seemed unbelievable. After all the money that was made, I wonder how much gain the company will really have after all teh sales and refunds?
Below you will find the coupon and information to obatin you 15.99$% refund......there is a limited time to claim your refund! http://www.babyeinstein.com/parentsguide/satisfaction/upgrade_us.html
I should forward this to every friend I bought the video for.

Non Profit Advertising and Women

i AM PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER FOR OUR final presentation, and I am flabbergasted and the amount of non profit companies that use women and sex to sell, raise awareness, etc.  I mean, I guess I shouldn't be so surprised Sex Sells, adn why wouldn't non profits use the same marketing stratefgies that for profits do?  I guess I just thought Non Profits had some more values.  PETA has the rather dance naked than wear fur, then there is the reborn to be alive campaign, a sexy twist on organ donation, then there is a beutiful day for cancer music video, . . take a look at some of these ads and let me know what you think. . .

Do non-profit videos have different rules?

Lisa,
I guess you said it well.....sex catches the attention of viewers regardless if weather it is profit or non-profit.  I watched your video and thank you for making me aware of these types of videos.

My question is it okay to accept any material when it is non-profit?......because there is no money to be made and it is clearly to send out a message?

( I would think people would be more accepting of it)
