Helping Haiti

Paul R Carr's picture

The situation is grave.
Some US media reports have focused on how substantive, generous and focused the US response to the crisis has been. The attached Democracy Now interview questions this thinking, providing arguments that the Cubans may have been more substantic, generous and focused in their response to the crisis, especially in light of the fact that Cuba has been educating Haitians to become doctors for years as well as sending large numbers of Cuban doctors to Haiti over the years.
The interview discusses the history of Haiti, emphasizing the nefarious role played by the US since the inception of the Haitian state, including militarizing the country, supporting dictators, not contesting slavery in the early days, etc.. How complicit were "we" in creating this present crisis? It is a natural disaster but the poverty that preceded it was not willed by the Gods (contrary to what Pat Robertson might think) but was structurally imposed.
Regardless, this is a humanitarian catastrophe that requires immediate and sustained support.
