presentation on advertisements

The presentation about how women are portrayed in advertisements this week was very interesting. One of the issues that I felt we could have discussed more thoroughly in relation to this topic was the impact these images have on teens. Not too long ago I did an assignment with one of my ethics classes discussing some of the images that the media (primarily through advertisements) portrays in regards to women. Not surprisingly most of the students were cognizant that advertisers use sexuality to sell products. However, something that surprised me was that most of the students that were vocal about this topic had a very clear understanding of how this can be harmful to society. They understood and were able to articulate that the objectification of women was harmful because it reduces women to mere objects that have very little value aside from their physical bodies. They also understood that presenting women as unnaturally thin was dangerous because it promotes unhealthy and, for the most part, unattainable ideals which in turn can cause low self-esteem for some women.

Another topic that came to mind when listening to the presentation was, do the people creating advertisement with disturbing undertones of brutality towards women, realize what they are doing? Are they purposely trying to be outrageous just to catch peoples’ attention or is there some kind of perverse agenda involved?
