Post-Secondary Faculty Development Through a Critical Lens

As I make this initial entry, I would like to reference Jaime Grinberg's blog on this site. The main focus seems to be the problemetization of Teacher Education in the school system in the US, and the blog is setting a fine example by getting off to an energetic start: http://www.freireproject.org/blog/101

I considered just adding to Jaime's blog (and I will certainly respond to it) but I would like to introduce a parallel topic - the question of so-called faculty development at post-secondary institutions. Whereas Jaime raises questions about teacher education, I want to shine a spotlight on what is perceived to be faculty development in "higher" education.

Not only are resources applied to teaching the teachers who will be teaching our children, but programs of all kinds are dedicated to teaching faculty across every discipline. The stated goal is to improve university and college teaching.

Among other things, this (probably infrequent) blog will consider what is meant by improving post-secondary teaching. From whose perspective? For what purpose? To what end? There are so many more questions, and this is just the start.
