Baeza Congress 2009 Schedule --UPDATED

Bienvenidos! Welcome! Merhaba!

Benvinguts! Wachiya! Fàilte!

The Paulo and Nita Freire International Project for Critical Pedagogy, and The Friends of Paulo and Nita Freire for the Development of Critical Pedagogy, Spain with the collaboration of the Centre of Research in Theories and Practices that overcome Inequalities at the University of Barcelona; and The University of Granada, welcome you to our gathering in Baeza, Spain. We are here to share our work, advocate for social justice, and create a strong global network of like-minded colleagues who are engaged in critical cultural work. We come together with a hope of humility, love, and commitment, and as we gather, we will celebrate the lives of Paulo Freire, Jesus “Pato” Gomez, and Joe L. Kincheloe…it is in loving celebration of these three men that we dedicate this Congress.

As we mentioned when you were invited, this gathering will provide space for framing debates on global issues, to translate theory into action, and for devising creative responses to pressing issues, especially those directed at alleviating poverty and vulnerability, and in engaging in acts of social justice. We will become a force for those who need our assistance in collaboration, research, tenure and promotion, and advocacy. We did not ask that participants “present” a traditional paper or publication, instead, we asked that you prepare a short outline of concerns and interests, and that you participate in collective conversations and initiatives. We have created four focus areas for our consideration:
  1. Radical Love. Built upon foundations laid by Paulo, Pato, and Joe, we will discuss how love fits within our critical pedagogical notions of education and community.
  2. Critical Health and Well-being. One of the issues often ignored by those who see themselves as sub-cultural to mainstream educational networks, is health. As many of us engage in “fighting the good fight,” we find that our health and spiritual wellbeing is affected. Laura Bushnell is here to share with us her spirit and knowledge in creating a more harmonious life as cultural workers.
  3. Critical engagement with and by Indigenous Peoples. So often work and research is done “on” and “about” indigenous peoples. We want to change the conversation to include ways in work with indigenous groups equalizes research and pedagogical opportunities, and creates critical inclusive networks—locally, globally, and interdisciplinarily.
  4. Critical Global Networking, Publishing, and Advocacy. We are at a point where we need to have a strong critical friends network. A global home where we can draw upon friends, colleagues, researchers, students, teachers, and community members to “have each others’ back,” to stand alongside those who need our advocacy. We need to assist one another in publications, networking, tenure, promotion, job searches, and moral support.
