Persistent Child Poverty

Article in Education Week 2/6/08 pp. 1 & 14 by Viadero: Poor Rural Children Attract Close Study.

Interesting map on page 14 showing counties by State in USA where child poverty has persisted since the 1970's.

The irony is that the majority of these states where child poverty persists are Red States.

These folks need some Conscientization. Critical Pedagogists should send "missionaries" into those areas.

Rural youths (18-24) in these areas are more likely to serve in the military than their urban counterparts.

Follow up on Disproportionality

This week (1/30/08) in Education Week "Eye on Research" page 1

Article: Teachers Advised to 'Get Real' on Race (D. Viadero)

Teacher attempts to balance work groups by race are not always met well by African-American students (Rubin).

Thought: Hispanic students attend ESL classes. Besides helping students learn English, ESL classes also provide a comfortable area and time for Hispanic students to get together and 'retrieve' their cultural identity.

Is there a way, African-American students could be afforded such an opportunity?

Deconstructing Disproportionality

A New Metaphor

Hayek: doubts that there can be social justice; people act out of self-interest forming clans based on exchanges (Agency)

Dawkins: neo-darwinist; people act like genes bonding out of self-interest

Neoliberals: market determines value based on self-interested exchange not on ethos.
