I have just commenced my second year of my PhD which I am undertaking at the University of Ballarat in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Ballarat is a regional town of about 80,000 people located in south-east Australia. My PhD topic involves a critical ethnography of two elementary schools in a rural location in contexts of disadvantage. I aim to explore the relationship the school has with the local community, and how they draw upon the local "funds of knowledge" (Smyth, 2008, p. 68) in the education of the students. Using critical pedagogy's theoretical perspective I will also examine to what end the schools undertake student engagement from a critical/transformative perspective of education (Portelli and McMahon, 2004) .
